John Mateyko: Where Creativity, Community, and Curiosity Meet

Nestled in the scenic and thoughtfully designed community of Serenbe, Georgia—featured on national platforms like the Today ShowJohn Mateyko has built a life that blends creativity, connection, and quiet passion. His lifestyle reflects his love for timeless objects, meaningful community work, and the natural world around him.

Building Community Through Sports and Theater

John is more than a resident—he’s a driving force in Serenbe’s communal spirit. In 2021, he founded the Serenbe Athletic Association, where he now serves as both Commissioner and the familiar voice of its co-ed Chicago-style Softball and Kickball leagues. His efforts have helped bring people together around sport, fun, and shared experiences.

He’s also made his mark on the local arts scene. Through his work with Center Stage at Serenbe, John has helped raise over $450,000 for Terra Academy. The productions he’s led or supported have become community highlights, including The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge (2021), It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play (2023, 2025), and Die Hard: Once Upon a Time at Nakatomi Plaza (2024). Currently, he’s gearing up for a crowd-pleasing run of Mamma Mia.

From Watch Collector to Hollywood Stand-In

John’s interests extend far beyond the local stage. A lifelong lover of film, he once worked as a stand-in for Christian Bale in Batman Begins (2005) and Public Enemies (2009), giving him a rare glimpse into the world of blockbuster cinema.

Yet his most enduring passion may be for watches—particularly those that emphasize function over flair. He’s especially fond of Casio’s G-Shock line, favoring the square-faced models known for their clean lines and unshakable durability. Vintage-style dive watches and pieces from the Seiko family, including Grand Seiko and Credor, also hold a special place in his collection.

His philosophy is simple but distinctive: “The more boring, the better.” For John, a great watch isn’t about flash—it’s about reliability, simplicity, and honest craftsmanship.

Family Adventures and Global Curiosity

John’s personal story is just as vibrant as his professional and creative ones. He proposed to his wife Slavyana in front of the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany—a moment as magical as it sounds. Their shared journey has taken them from the Amalfi Coast on their honeymoon to Rome and Lake Como for their baby-moon. Today, their son Sasha enjoys enriching summers at TASIS in Lugano, Switzerland.

John's love of nature and travel has led him on countless adventures—from scuba diving with whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium to exploring underwater worlds in the Philippines, Hawaii, Portugal, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Italy. He’s also an avid sailor and cyclist, having crewed a winning team in the Midwinters San Francisco Bay Race and biked down the Haleakalā volcano in Maui.

Living a Life of Meaning in Serenbe

Through every chapter—whether on the softball field, behind a camera lens, or beneath the ocean’s surface—John Mateyko embraces life with curiosity and purpose. His story is one of quiet leadership, enduring passion, and a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship of both people and objects.

In the artistic and eco-conscious village of Serenbe, John has found the perfect place to continue growing, giving back, and collecting the moments that matter most.
